"Our mission in the Social Computing Group is to research and develop software that contributes to compelling and effective social interactions, with a focus on user-centered design processes and rapid prototyping.

Our work includes the Sapphire project, sharing, mobile applications, trust and reputation, collaboration, and story telling. To facilitate the rapid prototyping, we also have an online lab for running studies to evaluate our social user interfaces."

I'm just curious - about this whole "social software" trend, and what is "in it" for me? I joined here thanks to your invitation, several months ago I joined friendster, after an invitation from Dwayne Cox - took a look around, and it looked mostly like local dating sites to me, so didn't go back.

Those who know me know that I much enjoy the learning and socialization aspects of the web - but for that purpose - not as a plan to build business contacts or attract capital.

Have been subscribing to Cynthia Typaldos group for a little while:
groups.yahoo.com/group/webcommunities/ - and from there checked out some of the other "social software" platforms - although have not become a member of any, yet, as well as blogs etc. discussing the issues. Think have 10 "social software platforms" bookmarked, and a few blogs.

On the one hand, there simply isn't enough time. I've been a member of Ryze and eCademy for six months or so, but haven't really had time to explore those much either. Or rather, Made Time Available for them. Seen the value of such time.

On the other hand, I may share some of the reservations some people have - in that it seems to simply be a place to drop off your business cards - despite reading many stories how some people have drummed up tons of business via these sites.

In my "new" business, which is pretty much limited to selling collaboration space for learning as well as business communications - will joining these networks, spending all the time it takes to become familiar and build reputation there, amount to much more than just spamming myself and our products? Marketing myself in the midsts of the competition?

Is that how it is done today? :-?

Worthwhile thread, and something everyone I meet (secretly) wants to incorporate :

How to combine meaningfulness of work, with doing something that generates money, and also is making sense in a larger context.
I think you´re right Christian, we´ve still only begun to explore the possibilities.

        Other perspectives ?

What makes sense is a concept which incorporates trancendence of culture and time itself; something that is based on self regeneration. Something that lasts. This is very different from the current wastefull standard of quick-cash trend-based planned obscolesence and will require a lot of "un-learning" of established marketing formulas and the counter acting of peer pressure driven consumerism.

As pointed out somewhere earlier, it will soon all become about meaningfulness. What is meaningful? That is the question. To the individual, that can be a personal issue. From a marketing perspective, the real question ought to be: what's meaningful to the widest demographic?

People are increasingly tapping into their global interconnectedness; global awareness; global responsibility... The individual CAN make a difference, even on a global scale. The internet is largely responsible for this rapid transformation of single minded perspective. The internet is after all a true open ended concept in and of itself. Soon words such as renewability, re-generation and re-invention will permeate the widest reaching marketing campaigns as ecological awareness is slowly but surely on the rise. Then again, so seems facism.

At any rate, education or the free flow of information (to counter propaganda) seems crucial to the survival of any new earth friendly sensible and wide reaching models. And somehow the resources to do this must also be generated in non conventional manners to stand the best chance against the current more powerful standards. Clever concepting will determine everything.

Just my humble oppinion and nothing new by any means.

Those are great questions, Lars. I haven't been too active in these social networks yet myself - though I have a new year's resolution to make more of an effort to investigate the possibilities.

As a potential answer, I have recently thought about the potential for social networks as reputation systems(www.markcarey.com/web-dawn/...ems.html), that can be used for social and business interactions. For this to truely work, it seems, the system would have to be open and peer-to-peer in nature - so that any number of applications could access nad use the reputation information contained therein. Currently there are many islands - while you may build a reputation on one island, you can't take it with you to the other, even thought you are still the same person. For this reason, it seems, the ulitmate social network will be the one that is controlled by no one, and open to all.
