Which are the necessary and sufficient concepts that we need to enable rebirth of business ?
What do we have to unlearn, and why ?

Wed, December 17, 2003 - 7:53 AMThis is, scenario-wise, perhaps the key uncertainty :

Thu, December 25, 2003 - 5:09 PMInteresting stuff!! I use DATs all the time...
Indeed, we are almost fullon information society.
I feel we need to learn not to feel small or powerless against for instance our governments any more. We own them! The internet has the potential to shift power back into the hands of the people. Governments are putting up barriers to various degrees in all parts of the world to try to control the free flow of information because of this perceived treath which is anti-democratic.
An interesting link regarding internet censorship:

If the first world would furnish the developing world with the means to join the emerging global information society, that society would grow in becoming more valuable as collective information exponentially increases. This is very possible. So within this new approach of doing business would fit the age old saying "to give is to receive". We would then help ourselves by helping them. I firmly believe in open source programming, and as well in open source science and even politics. Open source spirituality? : )

Real Communication
Fri, January 2, 2004 - 12:56 PMWe need to unlearn the way business communicates with customers. Businesses need to remember that they are people, and sop are their customers. It's time to stop hiding behind faceless logos and static "brochure" web sites. Real communication, real interaction, and staning for something real are keys to the rebirth of business, in my opinion. -

Tue, January 6, 2004 - 6:48 AMI agree, the key thing the corporate world would have to unlearn is the fear of transparency, the irony here is that the first ones that would succeed in implementing that would reap a huge reward, even financially.

It's time to start telling them with our dollars....

Re: Concepts
Tue, January 13, 2004 - 10:27 PMEasy...businesses need to unlearn command-and-control hierarchies.
Self-adaptive and emergent behavior rises from the bottom-up...and it is this type of complex behavior that will be essential to their survival once consumers start demanding more than mass-produced products and relentless advertising.
Management also needs to learn how to get out of the way of its business and let it find its ecological niche in the market....and realize that they are equally as important to the company as is the guy in the factory making minimum wage...and no more important.

Tue, January 13, 2004 - 10:30 PMI highly recommend The Cluetrain Manifesto if you haven't read it yet. It addresses these issues quite emphatically.

Re: Concepts
Sun, January 18, 2004 - 5:38 PMI think that - much like web site development - general business needs to be based on the PRODUCT, not on what we think will sell, or what we think will go over well with internet search engines.
When we program our businesses based on perceived reaction in the community or our customer base, then we lose touch with a very important point: We got into business to begin with in order to sell a product, and make a profit.
Focus needs to be on quality products, quality customer service, and quality communication. Everything else will come in stride when those 3 basic needs are met.

Re: Concepts
Mon, April 19, 2004 - 3:01 PMthere was a book a while back on the subject of Emotional Intelligence"
Its also what street people have in NYC. having lived there 15 years while walking downa street feedback from other cultures could tell you how you were feeling and what you were hiding a mile away.
At first for many years actually this was very uncomfortable until I began to know of their perceptions more. For instance the spanish love to applaud and cheer a well dressed woman so by giving them all a big smile I was fully appreciated and protected. Those who resisted are the ones who jeapordized themselves and were at risk of being hurt or robbed.
I think we need to come back to our senses and to look beyond ourselves to see ourselves in places we didnt know we existed based not on image but on feeling/knowing/sensing. Knowing the math doesnt work here. -

Re: Concepts
Wed, April 21, 2004 - 5:10 PMbut everyone says that over and over for years and years. somany companies have that policy from bloomingdales to McGraw Hill.
I once heard a radio story on motorola which was once a good company and then had fllen way behind. The new management turned the company around just by changing focus. they decided they wnted to be the best and offer the best product and service and with that intention everything else fell into their lap.
the program doesnt come from the head it comes from the heart. not on behavior modification and rules and guidelines but from pure honest trustworthy intentions.
and motorola was not coming from ''ok ive got to beat the other guy.'..it was simply in creating a genuine good product. -
